JV Year End Comments from Coach V.
Now that the games are over and we begin the process of packing up the
equipment for the summer, the big picture of team/individual accomplishments
can truly be appreciated by all. Often over looked by the ebb and flow of a
very competitive season are the little things that lead to life-long
success. This year's squad, although the largest group I've ever had, should
be proud of their efforts and commitment not only to Poly baseball, but to
their personal growth. The rigors of a strenuous split-squad schedule forced
many players to continuously adapt to adverse scenarios. They gave me their
all, and that's all I can ask of them. It has been my pleasure to be apart
of their success.
5/9/08
Varsity beat MLK 2-0 in the final game of the season. Dylan
Stuart got the start and pitched 5-2/3 shutout innings (6 Hits, 1BB, 4K) and
Adam Mott finished the shutout, putting down 4 batters on 12 pitches (9 for
strikes) and striking out two. Jake Marisnick was the hero with the
bat, getting Poly's only hit with two on, two outs, and two strikes,
breaking up the no hitter. Jake stayed in a pickle and allowed the
second run to score.
The Soph/Frosh team played well but came up short 4-3 in a J.V.
league game against MLK. Alex Richardson and Daniel Berg pitched well
allowing 2 earned runs in a combined 7 inning effort. Once again Jacob
Stuart was impressive behind the plate. Offensively the Bears were lead by
Nick Cordoba 1-1 (HB,SF,RUN), Chris Rabago 1-3 (3B,RUN), Thomas Combs 1-4,
Garrett Dabney 1-2 (BB,RUN) Zach Speer's sac bunt with 2 on in the 5th
allowed the bears to take the lead 3-1.
5/7/08
Varsity came up short in its bid to win a fifth straight Ivy League
championship falling to MLK 5-2. Kevin Verdaja got the start and
scattered 7 hits over 3-2/3 innings (2k, 1BB), but the defense gave up five
unearned runs. On the bright side, Trevor Creech pitched for the first
time since injuring his Ham string in the North game (4/12) and went 2-2/3
innings without allowing a hit. Blair Moore led the offense with a
double and a home run, scoring both of Poly's two runs. Ryan Nordbeck
was 2-2 (1B, 2B, HP)
The J.V. team feel victim to the baseball gods in a 12-7 loss to
MLK Wednesday. After taking the lead 4-3 and pitcher Andy Olsen in control
of the game from the mound a series of “baseball bad luck” plays opened the
flood gates for a King 9 run 5th inning. Despite the bad luck in the 5th,
the Bears were lead offensively by Jesse Santana 2-4, Chris Rabago 2-4 (2B),
Dylan Barnes 2-4, and Daniel Berg 2-4 (2B).
5/2/08
Varsity beat North 15-2 to avoid the series sweep 1-2. The Poly bats came alive and broke open

Barnes, Blair Moore, and Austin Haner all homered in the win.
The J.V. team defeated J.W. North 2-1 Friday improving their league record
to 9 – 4. Ryan Lafferty pitched a complete game to earn the win. Ryan’s
mound performance was complimented by outstanding defensive gems by Jesse
Santana, Tyler Freeny and Chris Rabago. With the game tied in the 3rd, Brad
Taylor singled to score Tyler Freeny with the go ahead and eventual winning
run.
4/29/08
Varsity lost a hard fought game to North 2-1 last night at UCR

up 4 hits. Kevin Verdaja relieved, pitching 3 innings, allowing only

loss.

over J.W. North. Ben Vasquez Pitched 6 innings for the win scattering 5
hits allowing 3 runs. Cole McElyea sealed the deal in the 7th to secure the

(2B) and Daniel Lopez 2-4. The freshmen take on the Monarchs of Mater Dei in
a double-header on Saturday. First game starts at 11 am.
4/22/08
A one out walk by K.C. Rentfro, a clutch hit-and-run single by Matt
Gabrielson, and a perfect squeeze bunt by Matt Palmer led to to the only run
of the game in Varsity's 1-0 win over Arlington.
Dylan Stuart allowed only 3 hits in 5+ innings of work and Austin
Barnes continued his scoreless relief, closing the final two innings to
secure the win.
The J.V. team dropped a league game to 16-8. Although the Bears
out-hit 15-14, it wasn´t enough on a day when the "long-ball" was on the
menu. Offensively the bears were lead by: Jesse Santana (4-4) 2B, Matt Davis
(3-3), Chris Rabago (3-4) HR, Dylan Barnes (2-4).
